Montana

1950 Montana Luxe

Original Type Bar Rest

Type bars did not align.

Some cork was missing.

The shades were really flattened areas of paint that needed to wrinkle again to match the rest of the housing. This may have been caused by me towel drying some places harder than others or even from holding the housing in that area, or it could have been normal wear that I did not notice before cleaning.

New Type Bar Rest Installed

All the bars nicely aligned

The obvious gap in the rest is now gone.

  1. Such resourceful work on the typebar rest. Your Montana looks nice, clean, and all set to use.

  2. The Montana sure looks great now!

I've cleaned several wrinkle-paint machines recently. Scrubbing Bubbles is by far the most effective stuff, in my experience, for getting down into the crevices. However, it does sometimes remove a little paint and it can harm decals.

  3. Bill, you did a great job on this and I really like the close-ups.

  4. Interesting read. So, re-heating YEARS after the pain was applied will cause worn and flat wrinkle paint to regain some of its original wrinkle? I am going to have to try that one! Neat stuff, looks like a beauty!

    1. Wrinkle paint is a soft paint. It is easily damaged. When resoftened like when cleaned with some cleaners, and sometimes water only, wrinkle paint will flatten. Sometimes it can be rewrinkled by drying it with heat. If it was worn off by years of rubbing it may not rewrinkle.

  6. masterful work Bill - your patience and effort paid off and now you have an even more wonderful machine.
question: did/does your spacebar have some discoloration? if so, how did you remove it, short of painting it?
    thanks!

  7. Good looking Montana! It differs from my 1945 Baby only in the chrome bars between the shell and the ribbon covers, and in the name plate. My type bar cushion has not crumbled like yours did, but it is hard. In fact, I thought it was wood. Would you send me some cork? Thank for posting the photos and directions. Bob on Montana
