Adler Vs. Smith-Corona Script Typeface

Adler.  Ransmayer Slugs.

Smith Corona Artisan 75 Slugs

These are slightly cleaner Adler slugs.

Smith Corona slugs.
They both are quite similar.  I do not know if Smith-Corona made their own slugs or used slugs made by an outside company.  The trademarks are not the same.
Both are elite.  Wish one was pica

Mark, Thanks for pointing out the similarity.

  1. It is great to see some script in comparison. I think my Facit 1620 is closer to the SMC.
Also, how do you go about figuring the manufacturer of the type-slugs? I assume it has something to do with the text between the top and bottom type, but that is all, really.

    1. Ken, yes, it is the text between the top and bottom character of the type slug. I ask on the TYPEWRITERS Yahoo! Group. Peter Tytell is the type face/type slug guru.

  2. im going to go with the classic 12 script typeface
it has a lot of bold style
certainly not your average garden variety cursive

    1. Michaellany, the SCM is a bit bolder because of the ribbon and the platen may be a bit softer. My reason for a future post with the same kind of ribbon, silk perhaps.

  3. Nice closeups.

I prefer the Smith-Corona typeface too; I find it a bit more readable. I don't like reading lots of cursive typing of any sort, though.

  4. Agree with Richard, love your photos of the slugs.
I like the Adler because it's slightly more unusual but the SCM definitely reads a bit better.

  5. My Adler looks a lot like your Smith Corona which is interesting. You Adler doesn't have the cool uppercase letters that dip below the baseline.

  6. Bill: Thanks for the nice comparison. I'm amazed at the number of script variations that showed up over the years. The sad irony is that cursive is one of the many things being dropped in favor of teaching to the standardized test in elementary schools. We perhaps love a dying art.

    1. Dwayne F. I could go on a tirade about the dumbing down of public schools, but I won't. It is sad though that schools are no longer teaching students but coaching them to pass standardized tests in order to get federal money thanks to G. W. Bush. Sad to see Cursive go as well as many other things students should be taught because some think it is not needed.

  7. I, too, like the Corona Script best. But then again, it might be differences of the ribbon.

  8. Although I agree that the SC script font is easier to read, the Adler is more artistic. I love the b, g, and l.

A more accurate comparison can be made when you get new ribbons for both machines.
